CELEBRATING EDNA CHAVANNES: WINDRUSH NURSE AT 90

Friday, 28 August 2020 | 19:30 – 21:00 |

Edna Allen (now Chavannes) was born in the parish of St. Andrew, Jamaica, in 1930. After leaving school, she worked for three years as a teacher, but always wanted to be a nurse. The opportunity came in 1951 when The Gleaner newspaper carried an advertisement for the recruitment of nurses in the UK. She applied and was accepted. The voyage on SS Cavina arrived at Avonmouth, Bristol, on 14 March 1951 and Edna journeyed by a train to Paddington, London.
